Now Playing "Muppets Most Wanted"
What do you
get when you combine the intrigue and suspense of an action movie, a love story
that has spanned the ages, with a spectacular gulag prison musical review? The “Muppets Most Wanted” of course. Earlier
this week, I was treated to special preview showing of this rip rollicking
adventure.
Opening in theaters across
the country today, “Muppets Most Wanted”
reunites Kermit, the divine Miss Piggy, all of your Muppet favorites and
introduces us to the world-renowned criminal Constaine, who bears a striking
resemblance to Kermit. "Muppets Most
Wanted" begins with a self-deprecating musical number, which includes
the line, "Everybody knows that the sequel's never quite as good."
Luckily, this statement couldn’t be further from the truth and what ensues is a
Muppet movie of old, in the spirit of Jim Henson with all the madcap twists and
turns that we grew up loving.
In this latest
installment, the Muppets hit the road for a European tour – setting the stage
for a series of international incidents along the way.
Constantine leads
the Muppets (only Animal knows he's not the real Kermit) as unsuspecting
accessories in a jewel heist.
Meanwhile, our beloved Kermit is in a Russian gulag run by Tina
Fey, where his show-running talents are put to the test. Ricky Gervais is the
perfect Number Two as Constantine's right-hand man Dominic Badguy
("pronounced bad-gee") and
Ty Burrell is the insufferable French detective Jean Pierre Napoleon. It wouldn’t be a Muppet movie without the help of some famous humans mingling with our felt friends.
Keep your eyes
open for Tom Hiddleston as The Great Escapo, Christoph Waltz waltzing with
Muppet giant Sweetums, "Downton Abbey's" Lord Grantham (Hugh
Bonneville) as a bribe-taking journalist, and Celine Dion going diva-a-diva in
a duet with Miss Piggy.
My personal favorites came from the Siberian gulag
where Kermit the Frog is sent. Where else can you see Ray Liotta, Jemaine
Clement, pro wrestler and major Muppet fan (and little person) Hornswoggle, and
"Machete" star Danny Trejo doing the opening dance from “Chorus Line”
to perfection I might add. And be sure not to miss the cameo by Josh Groban, heard long before it seen.
Will Kermit save
the day? And more importantly, will Miss Piggy finally get her frog and just
what will our divine Miss Pig be wearing?
