Minnie Mouse Swirl Cookies

Are you looking for something fun and Disney-ish to make with your little bakers? I stumbled across this recipe in Family Fun:

Minnie Mouse Sugar Swirl Cookies

You will need:
  • Sugar cookie dough (click here for recipe)
  • flour
  • wax paper
  • red or green food coloring
  • rolling pin
  • plastic wrap
  • red icing or gel

Step 1) Make cookie dough according to directions. Divide in half. Using your food coloring, color one half of your dough either red or green. Lay out a piece of wax paper and sprinkle it with flour. Place plain dough on the wax paper and roll out a 9x9 inch square about 1/8 inch thickness. Repeat this same step with the colored dough. I found making a template makes it easier to cut the exact same shape for both squares.

Step 2) Invert the colored dough onto the plain. Cut the square in to 2 pieces so one measures 6x9 and the second is 3x9. Place the smaller piece on a separate piece of wax paper. Start rolling each piece into a 9 inch long log. Wrap each log in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Step 3) Take each chilled log and slice into 3/8 inch slices.

Step 4) Place one piece from the bigger log on your cookie sheet. Using the rim of a cup or bottle, cut out 2 little semi-circles to make the ears fit in easily. Using a little water on your finger, rub the dough where the ear is to be placed. This will help it stick better. Now using 2 pieces from the little log, press in next to the head piece. Bake according to recipe directions. Let cool on your cookie sheet before transferring them to a rack or plate. Once the cookies have cooled, use the red gel to give Minnie a cute bow. Serve to your favorite Disney fans!

There are a few things I would change next time around. First of all, I cheated and used a package sugar cookie dough. They taste yummy but it is a very soft dough to work with. My Minnies got a bit puffier than I would have liked and I needed to chill the dough overnight before it felt stiff enough to work with. Lesson learned. I would also roll my dough into a 9x12 log. That way I could have cut two 9x3 piece to make ears. After all you need twice as many ears than heads. But after running out of ear pieces I had some leftover dough to play with and that can be just as fun. Enjoy!
