We did not see the movie in 3D but while watching it you could see where it would be great in 3D! You need to watch the movie closely and find the little hints that goes with the original Wizard of Oz movie with Judy Garland. The movie starts in black in white like the original movie and moves onto a larger screen with wonderful color.
James Franco plays Oz (Oscar Diggs), the three witches are: Mila Kunis as Theodora, Michelle Williams as Glinda and Rachel Weisz as Evanora (which one turns out to be the Wicked Witch?). Zach Braff is Finley, Oz's assistant and Joey King is the voice of China Doll, which is a great part of the movie. The animation in the movie is wonderful and you would never know that this was "animation", I also saw an interview with the actors and they said the whole movie was filmed on a set, not one once where they outside! We really enjoyed the movie and would definitely recommend it.
The only part I would warn you about is not taking small children, as some parts are a "little" scary.
The bonus to going was that they were selling pins for The Variety Club, which supports local children's hospitals, camps, boys & girls clubs and after school programs and of course I had to get one because it was Monsters, Inc. and a good cause.

Hoping these school schedules let up so I can get the kids there. I also heard them say it was a little scary for those under 8 or so.

Yes Kelly, I agree that it can be pretty scary for the little ones. I brought my 7 year old and she was okay with it because we did NOT see it in 3D. We all think that a few of the scenes would have been too intense for her otherwise. With that said, she LOVED it and has been talking about it all week. Like Judy said, I loved all of the similarities to the original with Judy Garland. It truly was a prequel and answers the questions as to how Oz became the wizard. Pretty cool, in my opinion.
