Disney Writers Unite To Change Lives #GiveKidsTheWorld #TagYoureIt

We Are Teaming Up To Change Lives
Disney Writers United Ice Bucket Challenge
Give Kids The World

Among the various blogging communities there are many groups of dedicated and talented writers that willingly and generously share their time and knowledge to help bring their passions to life.  From crafting to travel to movies to families, these talented writers have opened up their hearts to share with others something that is a part of themselves.  But there is one group that takes this passion to a place where wishes are born and dreams can and do come true with not only the way they so generously give of themselves in their writings and knowledge, but the way they unselfishly give of themselves going above and beyond to help others in times of need. These are The Disney Writers United. To the world, they are the passionate and learned connoisseurs of Disney. It’s that unique belief in the magic, the ability to, as Walt Disney put it, “….believe in a thing all the way, implicitly and unquestionably.”

This year the members of The Disney Gals and The Adult Side of Disney have joined together with the hope of uniting fellow Disney writers to give something unique back to the community. As Disney enthusiasts we want to spread our own special brand of pixie dust to those who need it most − critically ill children who wish to visit Central Florida’s theme parks.  We are putting forth a challenge to all of our fellow Disney Writers to unite in supporting a cause that is near and dear to each one of us- Give Kids The World.

Give Kids The World is a non-profit organization near Orlando that opened in 1989. Give Kids The World Village is a 70-acre, nonprofit “storybook” Village located near Central Florida’s most beloved attractions. Here, children and their families are treated to a weeklong, cost-free fantasy vacation, complete with accommodations in the Village’s whimsical villas, specialized transportation to the theme parks, attraction tickets, and much more. The resort is designed specifically for families with critically and terminally ill children with special healthcare needs that can't be fulfilled in the normal resort park environment.  The Disney Writers United along with the faculty and staff of Madrone Elementary School in Santa Rosa, CA want the world to know that we are Connected, Committed and Care about the magical families at Give Kids the World. The most magical sound in the world is that of a child’s laughter and that is what fills the air at Give Kids The World Village.

At the Village, these precious children learn that dreams really do come true, as they and their families are immersed in joy, hope, and non-stop fun for a few unforgettably happy days. Since 1986, the Village has welcomed more than 120,000 families from all 50 states and more than 70 countries. This extraordinary, life-changing experience is Give Kids The World’s gift, made possible only through the generosity of dedicated corporations and countless individuals.

If every writer were to give just $5, think of all the dreams that could and will come true.  Please help us support Give Kids The World.  Special thanks to the teachers, staff and parents of Madrone Elementary School for helping to kick off this The Disney Writers United Ice Bucket Challenge today.  Now it’s up to you-whether you stage your own Ice Bucket Challenge, find one of the many other creative ways to come together, or take a moment to visit our fundraising page at Give Kids The World Disney Writers United, think of the difference we could make in the lives of each of these families.  When you’re done, be sure to tag your friends in your video or post and ask them to help you take up this call to action.  Lastly be sure to leave in the comments below a link to your video or post, or let us know that you have joined in with The Disney Gals and The Adult Side of Disney to help make dreams come true. All comments will be entered to win a Disney Gift Basket Assortment full of prizes for young and old alike as well as a $25 Disney Gift Card. Winners will be picked by random number generator on September 1, 2014 at 5:00 pm EST.  Help make dreams come true and show the world what the power of faith, trust and pixie dust is all about. Believe in the Possibilities.....Live Your Dreams!

Anniversary trip made special by Disney

Let's take a walk through time and visit July 2013, my 20th Wedding Anniversary week at Walt Disney World. I booked the Yacht Club resort Club Level for an extra special trip, after all, this was 20 years! So like I usually plan our Club Level stays I requested  a water view room or view of the Boardwalk area which is just perfect.
My family arrived to find our room not yet ready but we were happy to be in the most magical place celebrating a momentous occasion in our life and marriage. We are headed down to Stormalong Bay pool to put up our feet, grab a bite to eat for lunch and wait for that text to say our room was ready.
My husband, myself and our two teenage boys love the pool and the surrounding area because let's face it, with teenagers the more stimulated they are the better, and this resort more than fits that bill!

Since I love storytelling I'm going to get right to the best part. We went up to our floor to grab a few drinks, some snacks set out for club guests and ask about our room. The Cast Member we spoke with was amazing, he wished us Happy Anniversary upon arrival, gave us our pin and now was giving us the news that we were upgraded to a larger room and they were just finishing up cleaning and putting some flowers in the room. Wow I thought, a nice bouquet of flowers was so thoughtful and the larger a room is a dream come true when traveling with teenage boys. That incredible Concierge Cast Member told us to come back in about an hour and the room would be all set.

Some more time enjoying the Florida sun, the lizards racing in and out of the wonderfully landscaped resort property made us feel even more relaxed, vacation time is on!
So we returned to the concierge desk and were given our room number, our new favorite resort cast member told us we were staying in his favorite room and to enjoy our magical Anniversary trip.
We all went together excited to see our room and I was excited to see my beautiful floral arrangement, Disney is known for the most amazing floral displays at all the resorts.
We found our room and realized it had two doors with the same room number, which one should we go in, was there a mistake here?
We entered and I was overwhelmed to say the least. This room had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large living room and a gorgeous view of Epcot and the Boardwalk as well as the water view boat
launch. We finally had our own room was all I could think of, and the boys had theirs.
Disney had outdone themselves, we stay Club Level for the impeccable service always, but this was more than we had ever dreamed of.
Our vacation was not only Pixie Dusted and magical, but so was our story to tell our family and friends. I felt like a Princess in my own tower with a view and the view was a Dream come true!
Just when you least expect it, someone or something makes all your Fairytale wishes come true and on this day in 2013 our's did!
Our heartfelt thanks to the Yacht Club Concierge Team and to our favorite resort Destination !

Dining For Less at Walt Disney World

Dining for Less Cha-Ching at WDW

For breakfast I suggest eating a granola bar or pastry in your hotel room, bring them from home or stop off at a local Target- 3200 Rolling Oaks Blvd
Kissimmee, FL 34747,
(321) 677-3971) or Wal-Mart Supercenter- Kissimmee 3250 Vineland Road, Kissimmee, FL 34746,407-397-1125 for breakfast items, drinks, snacks and Disney souvenirs at a huge discount.
Magic Kingdom- I would grab some yummies at Main Street Bakery, for starters a Starbucks, Venti White Chocolate Mocha & a breakfast sandwich or a delicious house-made Disney sweet, you’re spending somewhere between $10 to 15 bucks. At DHS- Starring Rolls Café is my choice; my family might grab a croissant or apple turnover for under $7.00, any grab & go type of food. Over at EPCOT- Fountain View in Future World has Starbucks espresso and specialty beverages or just fill up on warm and tasty treats like Artisan breakfast sandwiches and house-made Disney sweets. While at the Animal Kingdom- try Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery.
*I would definitely save my largest meal for lunch, it’s usually less expensive during lunch hours and you could experience upscale dining without spending all your cha-ching, maybe try “Be our Guest” a quick service dining facility at Magic Kingdom with fine dining appeal, based off the popular tale Beauty & the Beast. Here you have a choice of three enchanted rooms & meals under 15.00 pp. Try the Speedy Salads and Sandwiches, Quick Quiche or the Chefs fave 8-hour-braised pork & for the little beasts, they’ll love Mickey meatloaf or whole-grain macaroni. Lunch time at DHS- 50’s Prime Time Café, it’s a stick to your ribs kind of lunch with a 50’s theme & fun lovin’ family humor. EPCOT-is a great place for Sushi, Sunshine Seasons- has an inexpensive selection, gourmet sandwiches, soups and salads, and wood-fired entrées. Animal Kingdom-Tusker House hosts “Donald’s Dining Safari Character Buffet” 11am-2:45pm, with the price being a bit steep at $30 to 59.99 pp, but it’s a character buffet with African influences and it will definitely fill up the hungry hubby’s out there.

*Dinner at Magic Kingdom, I would grab a combo-style meal at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn in Frontierland, they have a terrific “toppings bar” so you can make the simplest item on the menu go a lot further. I like the 1/3 Angus Cheeseburger-$10.79 served with fries or apple slices or the Taco Salad-$8.79 & add some hot cheese, caramelized onions or Pico de Gallo, yummy to my tummy. I particularly like to dip my fries in the hot cheese, always a late night family fave! At DHS- the Hollywood Brown Derby $15 to $29.99 per adult from 3:30-9:30pm. Enjoy a nice signature dinner with herb-roasted rack of lamb over buttermilk blue cheese-corn pudding, desserts & more. EPCOT- Rose & Crown Pub, fish & chips with a beer, simple & tasty! Animal Kingdom-Flame Tree Barbecue for none other than yummy barbeque.
These are just a few suggestions for daily meals at WDW. By no means are they the cheapest for dining, but they offer a nice value for your money. Happy Eating*O*

The Fat Girl's Guide to the Magic Kingdom

My name is  Jill, and I'm fat. I'm not big-boned, I don't have a metabolism problem-- I just really like food. I prefer not to sugar-coat the truth, because frankly?  I'd probably eat that, too.

The first time I visited Walt Disney World, I was 5'3, well over 300lbs, and terrified. Was I too fat to enjoy the parks? Would I fit on the rides? I put the trip off again and again, hoping to lose just a few more pounds.

I wasted so much time being self-conscious. Walt Disney World is, by far, the most size-friendly destination in the country. Disney recognizes that guests come in all shapes and sizes, and has designed their attractions so that families can experience every magical moment of their vacation together.

Before having gastric bypass surgery last month, I took one last trip to Disney as a fat girl. My mission? To evaluate every attraction for fat-friendliness so that I could alleviate the concerns of every plus-sized aspiring Disney princess.

The Magic Kingdom is home to so many incredible experiences, and the Disney Gals only have so much space, so I'll only discuss the attractions that I believe might pose a problem for larger guests. If it's not listed here-- enjoy! You'll have plenty of room, and plenty of fun!

Note: In the Magic Kingdom, the biggest (pun intended!) issue for guests of size will absolutely be the turnstiles on the older attractions, like Carousel of Progress and the Walt Disney World Railroad. I could get through  by turning sideways and standing on my tiptoes and sucking in my tummy, but do not be afraid to ask for assistance if it is too tight.  If you have any doubt about being able to fit, it is better to ask a cast member to open an adjacent accessible gate than it is to struggle through the turnstile and find yourself stuck. Don't be a hero!

For comparison's sake, my waist measurement at the time of my last visit was 48", and my hip measurement was 56".  I am going to leave my bust measurement to the reader's imagination, because my grandmother will probably read this.

Adventureland:

  • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin are the perfect size for two smaller adults, or one large adult and one small child. If there are two larger adults in your party, each of you will need to tell the attendant you're a party of one, so that you can share a carpet-- one in front and one in back. Seat belt extenders are available-- just ask a cast member.

Frontierland:
  • Splash Mountain has bench seats, and the lap bar allows plenty of clearance for even the largest of individuals, but be careful when riding this with smaller members of your party-- I noticed that, when the lap bar was pulled tight for me, it wasn't tight enough to restrain my small child safely. Fortunately, I was able to alert a cast member quickly and re-seat my son with my husband. If possible, group the smallest members of your party together to ensure a snug fit for everyone.
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was a snug fit for me and a smaller adult, but I've ridden it comfortably many times with a larger child/teenager. The lap bar fit issue isn't a problem here, as the drops are much milder than Splash Mountain.
Liberty Square:
  • The Doombuggies in the Haunted Mansion will easily accommodate two larger adults. It is important to note, however, that the lap bar will close on its own. Do not be alarmed!
Fantasyland:
  • The Mad Tea Party was the only ride in the Magic Kingdom that I had any trouble with. While I fit into the ride, getting in and out of the teacup vehicle through the tiny door was difficult. If you're agile enough, I suggest putting one foot up onto the bench and then hopping 'over' the door. If not, again, do not be afraid to ask for help.
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh has small bench seats that will accommodate two smaller adults, one larger adult and a child, or one larger adult on her own.
  • I have not had the chance to ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train yet, but many other plus-size guests have reported that the vehicles will NOT accommodate larger riders. I have seen several sources put the hip-to-hip distance of the lap bar at 13". For comparison's sake, my lap measures 14" across, and my husband's lap is 16" across at 5'8 and 240lbs. The lap bar MUST fit over your lap and across your legs. This would be the only attraction in any of the four parks that I would suggest that larger riders consider skipping.
Storybook Circus:

  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant is a spinner ride similar to Aladdin, but only seats one row of riders per vehicle.  I would suggest larger adults sit by themselves unless there is a small child in your party. If you need a seatbelt extender, ask for assistance.
  • The Barnstormer is considered a child's coaster, so I was surprised when I fit into the vehicle easily. The vehicle is roomy enough for one larger adult and one small to medium child, or two larger adults. The adjustable bar allows plenty of clearance room for larger tummies. Note: Do not be afraid to ride this without a child. I saw many, many grown-ups sitting by themselves on this coaster. It's a quick, fun little ride, and the theming is adorable.
Tomorrowland:
  • Despite many complaints from larger riders I've talked to, Space Mountain has the roomiest, most comfortable seats of any roller coaster I've ever ridden. You will be seated single file, one rider per row, in a bobsled-style vehicle, with a t-bar that lowers between your legs and over your lap. There is a marked difference in leg room between the front seat of each bobsled car and the two seats behind it, so if you have long legs, ask a cast member for assistance.
  • Tomorrowland Speedway's cars are too snug for a larger adult to ride with anyone except the smallest child the ride allows-- I would suggest that plus-size adults ride alone. Seat belt extenders were not available at this ride as of February of 2014.
  • The Astro Orbiter's seats fit a larger adult comfortably, but I would recommend riding alone. I was able to ride with my seven year-old but I wasn't very comfortable.  Seat belt extenders are available. Note: It is difficult to enter this ride vehicle without being able to climb into the rocket. If you have mobility concerns, see a cast member.
  • Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin's vehicles are similar to the Haunted Mansion's Doombuggies, with one rather odd and  incredibly specific caveat: If you are a larger woman with an ample bosom and tummy, I would  NOT recommend  holding an infant or toddler on your lap. The ride vehicle and lap bar close automatically, and if you find that you or your infant are uncomfortable, you are stuck through the entire long, slow ride.
I hope all of this information will help ease your mind about your first trip to Disney World, but the most important advice I can give is not to worry for a moment. The rule of thumb here is simple: If you want to ride/see/experience it? Don't let your size stop you. Try EVERYTHING. Especially the grey stuff-- It's delicious!

Happy Anniversary Disneyland! 59 Never Looked So Good

“Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow, and fantasy.”

“Here is the world of imagination, hopes, and dreams. In this timeless land of enchantment, the age of chivalry, magic and make-believe are reborn - and fairy tales come true. Fantasyland is dedicated to the young-in-heart, to those who that when you wish upon a star, your dreams come true.”

Once upon a time, a man by the name of Walt Disney sat at a bench at an amusement park, watching his daughters play. As he sat there he noticed how ragged and filthy the small amusement park was and he watched the reactions of families to different rides. The one thing that rang through over and over was how children's parents had nothing to do. They would be anxious to go home, while their children were still having fun, and playing.
This is where Walt was conjuring, and planning a new type of amusement park; one that would be clean, and would have attractions for parents and children together. The result of this dream-Disneyland.

"What this country really needs is an amusement park that families can take their children to. They've gotten so honky tonk with a lot of questionable characters running around, and they're not to safe. They're not well kept. I want to have a place that's as clean as anything could ever be, and all the people in it [his park] are first-class citizens, and treated like guests."
Years before Disneyland was constructed, Walt was thinking, generating, and creating everything in his mind. He traveled the United States, and visited buildings of Americas most prolific inventors and creators, such as Thomas Edison's Workshop, the Wright Brothers Bicycle shop, and the home of the Dictionary magnate Noah Webster. While visiting these places, he was formulating and dreaming of a "Mickey Mouse Park" with a western village, Main Street, and more, these ideas would eventually form Disneyland.

From the start Walt Disney envisioned all the lands, to every detail. Main Street, U.S.A., the very front of the park, was where Walt wanted to relive the typical turn of the century city Main Street.

"For those of us who remember the carefree time it recreates, Main Street will bring back happy memories. For younger visitors, it is an adventure in turning back the calendar to the days of grandfather's youth."

Walt made Main Street U.S.A the entrance to a "weenie," as he called it.

"What you need is a weenie, which says to people 'come this way.' People won't go down a long corridor unless there's something promising at the end. You have to have something the beckons them to 'walk this way.'"

Adventureland. was planed as an "exotic tropical place" in a "far-off region of the world."

"To create a land that would make this dream reality, we pictured ourselves far from civilization, in the remote jungles of Asia and Africa."

Frontierland was designed to relive the pioneer days of the American frontier.
"All of us have a cause to be proud of our country's history, shaped by the pioneering spirit of our forefathers. . .Our adventures are designed to give you the feeling of having lived, even for a short while, during our country's pioneer days."

Fantasyland was created with the goal to "make dreams come true" from the lyrics of "When You Wish Upon a Star."

"What youngster has not dreamed of flying with Peter Pan over moonlit London, or tumbling into Alice's nonsensical Wonderland? In Fantasyland, these classic stories of everyone's youth have become realities for youngsters-of all ages-to participate in."
Fantasyland would feature a large Sleeping Beauty Castle, and a Fantasy Village.

Tomorrowland was shaped as a look at the "marvels of the future."

"Tomorrow can be a wonderful age. Our scientists today are opening the doors of the Space Age to achievements that will benefit our children and generations to come. . .The Tomorrowland attractions have been designed to give you an opportunity to participate in adventures that are a living blueprint of our future."

And thus Disneyland was born-the Happiest Place on Earth-the place where all your dreams come true.

"To make the dreams of Disneyland come true took the combined skills and talents of hundreds of artisans, carpenters, engineers, scientists and craftsmen. The dreams that they built now become your heritage. It is you who will make Disneyland truly a magic kingdom and a happy place for the millions of guests who will visit us now and in the future."

“Disneyland is the star, everything else is in the supporting role.”

“Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.”

Happy 59th Anniversary Disneyland and to Walt Disney, we can only hope that you are looking down and smiling, just as you once did from your apartment on Main Street grinning from ear to ear, a tear rolling down your cheek knowing that dreams can and do come true.
